Pension boards are made up of people from a very wide range of backgrounds, skills and expertise. This can sometimes lead to some individuals being reluctant to engage fully.
On one pension scheme we found that the trustee board was dominated by a few key people. Some members of the board did not feel comfortable contributing to debates and discussions.
After we took over as independent Chair of the board, we discussed this issue openly with the trustees. We took steps to ensure the disaffected trustees were drawn into discussions and their views sought and respected. We also changed appointments on board sub-committees to make good use of particular skill-sets.
During the following year, the trustees’ self-assessment reflected a much increased level of engagement and enthusiasm across the board.
